چکیده

In this paper we present a new model for routing that occurs in Abstract-1 high-speed ATM networks. Within this model we define a general routing problem, called a virtual path layout. Given a network of nodes (switches) and links, one must find a set of paths in the network, termed the virtual path layout, whereby each pair of nodes may connect using a route that is a concatenation of a small number of virtual paths and is also short in terms of the network links it traverses. Each such layout implies a utilization of the routing tables in the network’s nodes. Our goal is to find a layout that minimizes this utilization, assuming that each such node has a central routing table. We prove that this problem is NP-complete, and consequently focus on a simpler problem, in which it is required to connect all nodes to a single switch. Next, we prove that even this problem is NP-complete, and restrict some of the assumptions to yield a practical subproblem, for which we present a polynomial-time greedy algorithm that produces an optimal solution. Finally, we use this restricted problem as a building block in finding a suboptimal solution to the original problem. The results exhibit a tradeoff between the performance of a routing scheme and its resource utilization. This article contains results that were presented at the 13th Annual ACM Symposium on Principles of Distributed Computing [GZ94].

Efficient Support for Multicast Applications over VP-Based ATM Networks

In this paper, we present a new network design problem that is applicable for designing virtual paths (VP’s) in an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network to efficiently support multicast applications, especially real-time multimedia applications. We first address several alternatives for the solution and compare their properties. Then we focus on a new solution which sets up a semi-permanent ...

Dimensioning ATM Networks using 2-Layer Hierarchical Virtual Path Layouts

This paper addresses the problem of dimensioning multi-service ATM networks, where each service is supported by a different logical network. In the traditional approach, logical networks are configured with end-to-end VPCs, which greatly simplifies VCC admission control. This approach does not explore resource sharing gains since an end-to-end VPC bandwidth is assigned to each VCC flow. In this...

Dynamic multipath routing in networks and switches carrying connection-oriented traffic

We propose a dynamic multipath routing (DMPR) scheme to improve resource utilization of a network for a given quality of service (QoS) in carrying delay sensitive traffic. The proposed scheme takes advantage of available alternate routes which can be used beneficially in communication networks or switches, without increasing the network latency. Through simulation study of circuit-switched, vir...

Virtual Path Layouts in ATM Networks

We study virtual path layouts in a very popular type of fast interconnection networks, namely ATM networks. One of the main problems in such networks is to construct path layout that minimizes the hop-number (i.e. the number of virtual paths between any two nodes) as a function of edge congestion (i.e. the number of virtual paths going through a link). In this paper we construct for any n verte...

Visualization of ATM virtual path connection networks

ATM supports multiple quality of service classes for different application requirements. A Quality of Service is associated with a virtual path connection. Dynamic reconfiguration can generate an optimal virtual path connection network and maintains sufficient capacity to carry the established calls in progress. We developed a tool to present information specific to the changes of virtual path ...
